Touring routes near Hay-on-Wye
Here is an example of a tour we created from Abergavenny station, which you can do over 3 or 4 days, The Welsh Marches Cycle Tour. This tour is all on quiet backroads with some traffic free canal paths and cycleways, a combination of Sustrans routes 8, 825, and 42. There is plenty of accommodation on the way, so you could camp, stay in B&Bs or or even comfortable hotels. We can meet you at the station with bikes, and collect them when you have finished.
The Marches Tour 250km
The Wye Valley Tour 200km
A 200 km meander from near the source in Mid Wales to the sea at Chepstow, part in Wales, part in England, and probably the nearest thing to a flat ride in our area, although there are plenty of minor ups and downs to add interest. There are several towns en-route with a range of hotels and eateries, so you can do this ride at your own pace, taking 2, 3, or more days. Start in Llangurig and finish in Chepstow, for a downhill bias to the route.
Other route options.
As we are close to Herefordshire’s wonderful cider orchards, why not take an altogether more leisurely ride, sampling cider as you go?
Lost Lanes Wales
Three of the rides from Jack Thurston’s book of routes in Wales start from Hay-on-Wye, and another one a short distance away, so you could base a long weekend on riding some of these, or stitch them together to make an overnighter, as in the “Pannier CC” collection here.
Lost Lanes 13 Kilvert’s Hills (39km) Short but steep, and very quiet – not much chance for supplies on this route, so take some snacks it will take longer than you think!
Lost Lanes 14 Around the Black Hill (56 km) Very pretty scenery, very quiet lanes, and some sharp climbs. Choose a calm day as it is a bit exposed over the high ground.
Lost lanes 23 Wood from the Trees Start this one from Hay by riding over the Toll bridge at Whitney, and on quiet lanes via Woods Eaves to Eardisley. This will make the route about 90km, but it is one of the flatter routes with plenty of refreshments options, and would make for a lovely summer day ride.
Lost Lanes Overnighter 155km and lots of climbing… I was planning on putting some of these routes together, but I noticed that Pannier CC has had the same idea, so here is a link to their 3 Lost Lanes combination tour.
